The United Kingdom Shetland
Though small in stature, UK Shetlands ponies are large in heart. This breed was selected by our founder, Marianne Alexander because of its gentleness and keen sensitivity to children. Originally bred to do hauling on farms, these sturdy ponies were also used to pull carts into the mines of Europe and the United States.
The UK Shetland ranges in size from 30 inches to 39 inches. They are too small to be ridden by most children, but make wonderful driving ponies. These sweet-tempered ponies’ main job is to provide companionship to differently able children. The breeding of UK Shetlands for the Personal Ponies Program is now done with our own breeding stock.
